INTERSTATE 35 EXPANSION PROJECT TO BEGIN IN McLENNAN COUNTY

The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) will soon begin a construction project to widen a portion of Interstate 35 between Craven Avenue and the IH 35/Business 77 intersection in the City of Lacy Lakeview. The project is the first in the Waco District’s comprehensive IH 35 Corridor Improvement Plan.

The 2.5-mile project will consist of reconstructing the 4 existing travel lanes, adding an additional lane in each direction, adding a concrete median barrier, and replacing the bridges at both Craven Avenue and Crest Drive.

In an effort to maximize safety for construction crews and minimize the impact on the traveling public, lane closures will be limited to between the hours of 7 p.m. and 7 a.m.

Young Brothers Construction of Waco will undertake the $20 million dollar project, which is expected to be completed in late 2002.

The project will begin with the setting of barricades and other temporary traffic control devices along I-35 in the vicinity of Lacy Lakeview in early January 2001. Periodic traffic delays, restricted travel, and temporary lane closures can be expected for the duration of the project. Project updates and additional information on the Corridor Expansion project will be available on the IH 35 website, www.i35waco.com, in the spring of 2001.

TxDOT urges motorists to reduce speed, be patient and exercise extreme caution when driving through the construction areas.
